One of the most pleasant aspects of the Cayman Islands is their small size. Cayman Brac and Little Cayman are both less than 15 miles long and 3 miles wide, making them easy to navigate and eliminating the need for public transportation. The larger island of Grand Cayman offers several ways of getting around; perhaps the one that vacationers are most familiar with are taxis. Travelers eager to begin their relaxing vacation on Grand Cayman may decide that hiring a taxi is the simplest way to get around the island. Vehicles drive on the left side of the road, so visitors unfamiliar with the British style of driving often prefer to leave the driving to professionals, at least until they get a feel for things. Luckily, hired cars are widely available outside of airports and docks. These cabs can take passengers to any point on the island and operate on fixed rates. A sign is posted to notify visitors of the current rates, as they have a tendency to fluctuate. The standard rate is applicable to for up to three passengers. Those traveling in larger groups should speak with the driver to determine a rate, although they should expect to pay about one-third again. Surcharges will apply for extra luggage (a charge of $1.25(USD) per piece), waiting time (about $0.65(USD) per minute), and late night travel (an additional 25 percent between midnight and 6:00 a.m.). Fares can get quite expensive. So while taxis may be the easiest way of reaching your hotel from the airport or marina, many vacationers will find that cabs are not ideal for longer trips across the island. Overall, courteous and knowledgeable drivers make hiring taxis a convenient experience, but high prices can deter many travelers from relying on them as a primary mode of transportation on Grand Cayman. Fortunately, there are plenty of options for folks who want to see the island, meet the locals, and save some money. Related Articles
